Event Details
“Just Another Day” Group Art Exhibit by the Infinity Collective
Exhibit dates: June 20-July 27, 2024
Curated by Zsudayka Nzinga
Artist Reception: June 29, 6 pm-8 pm (Free & open to the public)
Exhibit Summary
Just Another Day challenges the notion that Black women as artists are required to attach political narratives to their work. The exhibit explores the freedom to create artwork that is not laden with the required Black narratives of social Justice, racism, and equality. Instead, it is a visual representation of Black women claiming the space to simply exist and share and celebrate moments of the mundane. Just Another Day features the work of the following artists: Camilla Angel, Shante Bullock, Artise Fletcher, Dany Green, Joy Nutt, Reshada Pullen-Jireh, Liz Stewart, Chantae Sudlow, Candice Tavares, and Vanessa Villarreal.
The irony of this approach is that the very act of Black women working to create without the requirement of being political inherently makes the work political. The exhibition challenges the viewer to disconnect from the need to over explain the Black woman experience or only be able to find relatability within their work when linked with a social/political cause. Traditional celebrations of Black women’s artwork focus on othering and fetishism by making the lived experiences of the artists into bullet points for social change, rather than allowing space for existence without assigning a job to their identity.
The narratives explored in the works will instead concentrate on the joy of creating artwork and exploring creativity around culture and experience, while not pressuring the artists to be the voice of radical change or the educators. It is an invitation for self-awareness, prompting the viewer to assess the language they use in describing the exhibition pieces and the artists and their identities, and to forge new language and practice around the celebration and appreciation of the art. The works thematic content focuses on moments with family, moments of rest and relaxation, celebrations of culture that aren’t calls for action, the exploration of fashion, and images that may explore trauma from the perspective of human experience and not as Black bodies seeking respite.
The Infinity Collective
The works are curated by Zsudayka Nzinga, whose curatorial practice focuses on storytelling and the voices of Black women. The Infinity Collective was brought together through a grant from the Honfleur Gallery in DC which targeted programming relevant to Black women artists. The grant was sponsored by Sharon Gaultier who had an interest in supporting work from women artists in the DC area. The Infinity Collective selected 11 Black women from the DMV area who were emerging, practicing artists whose work explored Black culture, both rooted in America and cross diaspora identities. Assisted by fellow artist, Shante Bullock, the artists went through an 8-week business building workshop with guest speakers ranging from attorneys to art representatives.
A Note from the Curator, Zsudayka Nzinga
In writing this, I became keenly aware of how necessary it is to make sure that people know we aren’t countering narratives of need for political and social change. Rather, it seeks to validate calls for action by creating an opportunity to emerge in the daily experience of Black women and seek the value equally in the voices of the experiences and creative practices of artists while not requiring them to pander their value in social political causes. The challenge rests on the shoulders of the viewer acknowledging the requirements they personally place on not just the work of Black women, but all communities they identify as “other”.
The artwork is for sale.

Factory of Fear
at ARTfactory’s Caton Merchant Gallery
October 10-October 31, 2024
(9419 Battle St, Manassas, VA 20110)
To coincide with ARTfactory’s annual Factory of Fear event and fundraiser, the Caton Merchant Gallery is organizing a group art exhibition titled “Factory of Fear”. The artwork in this juried group exhibit can but does not need to directly depict images of Halloween (pumpkins, black cats, etc.), and instead encourages artists to submit work of a “darker” nature. Think dark landscapes, unusual/surrealistic portraits and imagery, good vs. evil, the ethereal, abstraction, and overall, works that emanate a “darker” aesthetic or vibe.
About the Factory of Fear Event:
ARTfactory’s Factory of Fear (Friday, October 25 & Saturday, October 26)
Experience the ARTfactory like never before! Embark on a perilous journey through all four terrifying floors where waking nightmares lurk around every corner. Mark your calendars, gather your bravest friends, and prepare to face the horrors that await at the Factory of Fear! Visit VirginiaARTfactory.org for details.
During the event, the building will be transformed into a haunted factory where each floor will have a unique and terrifying theme for visitors to tour. The 1st floor art gallery will be transformed into a portrait gallery and wax museum.

About the Artist
Dulce Isalguez Parker is a Caribbean Island native, a cultural educator, and a woman military veteran who has traveled extensively around the world for the last 50 years. As a cultural educator, she has worked with many different cultures, conducting workshops, presentations and cultural diversity training in schools, universities, and Art-Cultural Centers. Her interest in cultures led her to study and collect native gemstones and connect with people. Dulce designs and creates beautiful one-of-a kind handcrafted jewelry using rare Caribbean semiprecious stones, “Larimar” and “Dominican Blue Amber” which are only found in her native country of the Dominican Republic.
Her inspiration and passion come from the natural beauty of her tropical Caribbean Island, its beautiful turquoise blue-green ocean, the tall green mountains, and tropical forests that are the origins of our Dominican Amber. Dulce combines Larimar and Dominican Amber with other natural gems stones, Lapis Lazuli, Red and Pink Corals, Fresh Water Pearls, Glass Bead Crystals, Agates, and Natural Shells. Her jewelry creations are unique pieces set in silver, hand beaded, and hand cut. The rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and pins are a “gift” from nature and have a special meaning to each person.

Exhibit Summary
“Earthly Delights”
In an artistic collaboration, Sandra McClelland Lewin and Bettie Sperty’s bright compositions combine in an exhibit that is a cross between nature’s earthly beauty and ethereal imaginary worlds. Sperty’s artwork ranges from colorful and whimsical to the fine detail of Trompe L’oeil. Her works pair seamlessly next to Lewin’s detailed representational, yet meditative acrylic paintings. The artwork included in this exhibit features vibrant birds, insects and animals, lush greenery and heavenly skies, all executed in delicate, beautiful detail and often enhanced with shimmering metallic foils, discreet sparkle or pearlescent accents. Each piece compels the viewer to take a closer look.
The artists hope that exhibit viewers will pause for a moment and allow the art to soothe their souls, relax their minds, and allow them to become one with nature.
“Like music and art, love of nature is a common language that can transcend political or social boundaries.”…. Jimmy Carter
About the Artists
Sandra McClelland Lewin
Sandra Lewin received a BA in Advertising Design, but didn’t really begin her artistic career until many years later when she became a computer graphic artist for the Central Intelligence Agency. After retiring from the government, she began taking classes in fine art such as watercolor, colored pencil, and acrylics. Her body of work is primarily representational, inspired by the beauty of nature, and is not limited to any one style or medium. Her graphics background influences her methodology, ensuring compositions that are balanced in movement and color. Hobbies of photography and travel provide inspiration and abundant material for her paintings. Through her color choices and subject matter she hopes to elevate the spirit, causing the viewer to slow down, smile, and enjoy the moment. She considers her art a success if it motivates that sort of peaceful reflection.
Bettie Sperty
Bettie Sperty is a local Virginia artist who enjoys working with a variety of mediums.
She truly has been honing her skills since childhood, when more than once she was reprimanded for drawing in all of the margins of her school papers and on her homework. Though mostly self-taught, she has always been inspired by watching other artists, learning from them and also exploring techniques, styles and mediums on her own.
Bettie’s painting style runs from fun, colorful and whimsical to the fine detail of photo-realism. Her pieces are quite often inspired by nature and enhanced with metallic foils, iridescent paints or other sparkling accents.
Bettie creates her pieces for her own enjoyment and is always happy if someone else enjoys them, as well.

Exhibit Summary
“Earthly Delights”
In an artistic collaboration, Sandra McClelland-Lewin and Bettie Sperty’s bright compositions combine in an exhibit that is a cross between nature’s earthly beauty and ethereal imaginary worlds.
Sandra McClelland-Lewin
In her own words she says, “My goal is not to make a social or political statement. I don’t hope to change the world or draw attention to a cause. My hope is simply to make your eyes happy, to touch your heart, with the art I create.”

Come prepared to scare!
ARTfactory is looking for scare actors ages 16 and up for our new haunt:
Factory of Fear
Friday, October 25 from 6:00-11:00pm and Saturday, October 26 from 6:00pm-11:00pm
The audition will consist of several guided group exercises to show our team how well you understand the nuances and timing of scaring.
The team will observe your characterization choices, so please come up with an idea of what character(s) (ie, witch, vampire, zombie, ghost, and/or others) you will embody during each exercise. Other than that, you will not need to prepare anything for the audition.
Guidelines:
- NO PROPS: please don’t bring any physical props to the audition.
- Please wear comfortable attire that allows free movement.
- If we need to see something from you, we will ask to see it. You do not need to prepare anything except the character(s) you’d like to show us during the exercises.
- Please only scare when asked. DO NOT take it upon yourself to startle or scare anyone outside of the audition space.
- Saftey is the number one goal at ALL TIMES. If you are doing something that is unsafe or could jeopardize the safety of anyone at the auditions, you may be asked to leave.
We want to see that you take direction well, are willing to step outside of your comfort zone, and understand scaring and the timing required to maximize the effects.
Here is an article with some tips on nailing your scare actor audition: Auditions and How to Survive Them
Schedule:
Rehearsals: Wednesdays and Thursdays October 9, 10 & 16, 17 from 7:00-8:30pm
Scare Workshop: Friday, September 13
Tech Week: Tuesday, 10/22-Thursday, 10/24 7:00-9:30pm
Event Call: Friday and Saturday, 10/25-26 4:00pm-12:00am
NOTE: Depending on the number of scare actors cast in the event, there is a possibility you may not be scheduled for every show or even the whole time. Once cast, you will receive a schedule for your part in the event.
Strike/Tear Down and Halloween Party to follow: Sunday, 10/27 12:00-5:00pm
This is a volunteer position. You will receive a Factory of Fear T-Shirt for your time, and we will provide refreshments for scare actors as well. We will also be throwing a Halloween Party after the event tear-down to celebrate your amazing work!

Rooftop Productions announces auditions for Meredith Wilson’s Miracle on 34th Street.
A holiday classic from the writer of the musical theatre classic, The Music Man!, and based on the movie of the same name, Miracle on 34th Street features a book and score by none other than Meredith Willson.
Single mother, Doris Walker, doesn’t want her six-year-old Susan’s head filled with romantic notions. Their neighbor, Fred Gailey, tries to woo Doris by charming Susan and taking her to see Santa Claus at Macy’s, where Doris works. Doris is not impressed, but when it turns out that Macy’s Santa may, in fact, be the real Kris Kringle, a wave of love spreads across New York City that melts even the most cynical hearts.
Filled with humor, spectacle and such beloved songs as “Pinecones and Hollyberries,” “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” and “My State, My Kansas,” this joyous, heartwarming musical is pure family entertainment, wholesome without being cloying. A star-vehicle for a female actress that features great roles for children, the show is a cast- and crowd-pleaser.
